November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month: CAMC Encourages Early Action and Education

November 4, 2025

Each November, Lung Cancer Awareness Month calls attention to one of the most significant health challenges in the United States. At Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), we’re dedicated to helping our community understand lung cancer risks, recognize early warning signs, and access the advanced screenings and treatments that can save lives.

Lung cancer doesn’t have to be a silent disease. With greater awareness and proactive healthcare, early detection is possible—and outcomes improve dramatically.

Understanding Lung Cancer Risks

Lung cancer affects both men and women, smokers and nonsmokers alike. While smoking remains the leading cause, other factors such as secondhand smoke, radon exposure, air pollution, and family history also contribute to risk.

In West Virginia, where smoking rates are among the highest in the nation, awareness and prevention are especially critical. CAMC is committed to supporting patients with education, early screenings, and comprehensive care tailored to each individual’s needs.

The Power of Early Detection

Lung cancer often develops quietly, showing few or no symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. That’s why screening with a low-dose CT (LDCT) scan is so important. This simple test can detect lung cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages, long before symptoms appear.

You may qualify for a lung cancer screening if you:

  • Are 50–80 years old, and
  • Have a history of 20 or more pack-years of smoking, and
  • Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years, and
  • Are in good enough health to undergo potential treatment if lung cancer is detected

CAMC offers LDCT screenings, making it easier than ever to take charge of your lung health.

A lung cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to face it alone. At Charleston Area Medical Center, our team brings together leading oncologists, radiologists, pulmonologists, surgeons, and support staff to deliver coordinated, compassionate care every step of the way.
